Hunting in Florida: A Diverse and Distinct Experience
Florida’s warm, tropical-to-subtropical environment presents both challenges and excitement for hunters. While white-tailed deer and wild hogs are the most frequently pursued game, the state is known for offering distinctive hunting opportunities, such as alligators, Burmese pythons, and the elusive Osceola turkey.
Abundant Game and Year-Round Wild Hog Access
White-tailed deer are plentiful across the state, with hunters harvesting over 100,000 deer annually, making them Florida’s top game species. Wild hogs follow closely in popularity. These animals can be hunted or trapped throughout the year on private land with the landowner’s consent—no license or bag limits required. On public land, however, hunters must obtain a permit and follow seasonal guidelines.
Osceola Turkeys: A Florida Exclusive
A prized species among turkey hunters, the Osceola wild turkey is native exclusively to peninsular Florida. Unlike its eastern cousin found in the Panhandle, the Osceola is generally smaller and displays darker plumage with more subtle white markings on its wing feathers. Its limited range makes it especially desirable for non-resident sportsmen.
Black Bears and Regulated Harvesting
Florida’s black bear numbers have risen in recent years. A tightly regulated hunting season was held in 2015, but although future seasons have been discussed, no additional hunts have been officially scheduled to date.
Alligator Management and Harvest Quotas
Florida is internationally recognized for its successful alligator management program. Each season, officials designate hunting zones with defined harvest limits. With proper licensing—including a trapping license and CITES permits—hunters may legally harvest up to two alligators per permit.
Invasive Burmese Pythons
Burmese pythons, large constrictors not native to the region, pose a major ecological threat—especially in the Everglades. To control their population, these snakes can be removed year-round from both private lands (with landowner approval) and designated public areas like Wildlife Management Areas and Environmental Areas, without requiring a special permit.
Additional Game and Outdoor Adventures
Florida also offers outstanding opportunities for hunting waterfowl like ducks and geese, as well as upland bird species. Many hunters pair their excursions with fishing trips, taking full advantage of the state’s rich outdoor offerings.
