High country mule deer hunts are our passion. Make no mistake, mountain mule deer are tough, and hunting them is even tougher. For those that have the drive and physical ability to get up high, these hunts are remarkably rewarding. There is nothing prettier (or tastier) than a mountain Muley and the mule deer in our area are among the best in the state of Montana on public land. Horseback mule deer hunts are the ultimate western hunting experience.
Montana mule deer are not the same all over. Mountain mule deer in our area are not like the mule deer you will find in the deserts in other western states, or in the plains in the eastern part of Montana or elsewhere. Mountain mule deer eat different browse that result in large antler base mass, as well as deep chocolate coloration of the antlers. The mule deer grow quite large, and it is not uncommon for a deer to exceed 325 pounds in weight fully dressed out.
Our mule deer love the high country! Given the size and range of the mule deer in our area, using horses and mules is a must to cover ground and access the best habitats. Hunters need to realize that mountain mule deer occupy the high peaks and remote corners of the Rockies. If you truly want a trophy mountain mule deer, you must be prepared to work for it. Our turf covers portions of the Swan Range and Bob Marshall Wilderness, areas famed for their epic terrain.

Boone and Crockett will confirm that the Flathead National Forest is one of the largest producers of trophy whitetail deer on public land in the country. We believe we offer hunters an incredible opportunity to hunt whitetail deer here in Montana. Deer here can be either mountain whitetails or plains whitetails. Our guide specializes in mountain whitetail deer. Hunting for whitetail deer in the mountains of Montana is unique experience, done differently than in the mid-west or south.
These are among the most rugged Montana elk hunts, and we often describe them as “extreme” hunts. Our hunts are guided in the Bob Marshall Wilderness and Swan Valley areas of Montana off of horseback. Our guides and horses have been preparing and getting shape all summer long on backcountry pack trips, elk season is what they’ve been waiting for!
