Said to be the toughest of the North American big game species to harvest, Roosevelt Elk Hunting is where our hunting passion began as a child. Born and raised on the West coast, we have years of experience hunting these majestic animals in Western Oregon’s Coast Range and Southwest Washington’s coastal rainforest mountains. Permitted by State, BLM an USDA-Forest Service to hunt  from the Washington to California border in Western Oregon. We scout year around for these animals and have 15-25 game cameras year around throughout the coast. The areas that we hunt is a mix of State forest lands and private timber company land that offers a very diverse habitat. The landscape is mesmerizing with Its deep canyons, streams and miles of vast forests. On clear days you can often see the ocean from the high peaks of the coastal mountains. The units that we hunt have guaranteed tags for archery hunters as long as they purchase the license prior to the start of the archery season in late August. Rifle hunters must purchase a guaranteed outfitter tag or apply for a controlled draw with a deadline of May 15, but nonresidents are guaranteed to draw the tag. This unit is a 3-point minimum with a bow or rifle and has one of the highest elk densities in the state. Not only is it beautiful but its elk rich and a great place to notch your tag.

A successful Roosevelt elk hunt in any of our areas will qualify you for the North America Grand Slam, SCI, Boone and Crocket and Pope & Young awards for the Roosevelt Elk species.

Terrain and Hunting Techniques

To sum it up in as few words as possible. The terrain on the Oregon coast is mostly steep and brushy. Canyons are one after the other and often filled with tall trees and heavy, dense brush. The forest floor is often covered with brittle sticks and leaves, making it difficult to move quietly without rain. Once you have reached the canyon bottom however, it is often a breathtaking view with grassy creek bottoms, salmon berry thickets and the preferred habitat for mature bulls. Steep and brushy is the typical for Roosevelt elk. Shot opportunities in the timber are most often 75 yards or less. Areas where the timber has been cut down, also know as clear-cuts, can provide early morning and late afternoon feeding, but bulls seldom spend time in these areas during the daylight. During the low light hours of morning and evening we often utilize glassing in these clear cuts, with shot opportunities often reaching 400 yards or more if you are capable. We prefer to sneak as close as possible for the shot. The rainforest is a bad place to wound an animal.

Expect to use methods such as still hunting through heavy timber and creek bottoms, blinds or stands in bedding areas and  trails and tracking bulls through the rainforest. We also utilize glassing clearcuts and spot and stalk when appropriate.

Wound policy

Our guides will do everything in our power to give you a great shot opportunity within a reasonable distance. With that being said, we do not take risks when pulling the trigger. You, as a hunter, have the responsibility to make an ethical, clean and quick kill. Unless you are 100% confident in your shot, you should not take it. As sportsmen, we are responsible for our wildlife. Thousands of animals each year go unrecovered due to poor shot placement.

We understand that things happen and that sometimes a great shot isn’t that great. However, we will advocate for the animals every time. Should you shoot an animal that we deem to be mortally wounded and are unable to recover it, we will then be searching for that animal for the duration of your hunt. We do not have a 48 hour rule or a pay to keep hunting another animal rule.

Booking

All hunts are booked on first come first serve basis. We take a small number of clients each year and often book hunts a year or more in advance so availability is usually limited. It is important to plan early when booking a hunt with us.

Licensing

To be eligible to hunt or apply for an elk hunt in the state of Oregon all hunters must first create an online profile on the state website https://odfw.huntfishoregon.com/login and purchase your Resident or Non-Resident hunting license. Once you obtain your state hunting license archery hunters can buy an over the counter tag as long as it is purchased prior to the start of the archery season at the end of August. Rifle hunters must apply for a guaranteed draw with a deadline of May 15 to apply. Once again, this draw is guaranteed for non-residents. You then have until the day prior to the start of your hunt to purchase your tag. If you do not purchase your tag prior to the start of the season you will be unable to obtain it. If you would like to apply for the draw, please call and we will give you the correct hunts to apply for and assist you with your application.

What’s Included

All hunts include meals, lodging, guide service and all transportation once you arrive in camp. Also included is skinning of your animal and preparing meat and hide for delivery to our local butcher shop and taxidermist. We will also assist with preparation of meat and hide for airplane travel. If you wish to donate some or all of your meat, we have a form for you to fill out to make it a legal process.
